My child has “buck teeth.” What are some of the ways we could have this treated?

“Buck teeth” is a condition where the upper teeth overlap the lowers in a horizontal relation; orthodontists would call this exaggerated overjet. This typically involves a condition where one or more of the following conditions are exaggerated:

  • perhaps the top teeth stick out too far; the focus should be on bringing them back.
  • the bone supporting the upper teeth can be too far forward; efforts should be made limit further jaw growth.
  • the lower jaw bone might be too far back, the emphasis should be on enhancing lower jaw growth.
  • the lower teeth can be set too far back on the lower jaw; in this case you can bring the lower teeth farther forward on the jaw bone.
  • combinations exist of these two conditions; or there can be a vertical component to the problem.
