It appears as though my son will need braces. His teeth are crowded and not lined up correctly. Other than straight teeth, are there other benefits to orthodontic treatment (braces)?

Crooked and crowded teeth are not only difficult to keep clean and properly maintain, they can actually cause decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Other consequences could be abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, and problems with headaches and jaw joints. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Early intervention can be less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that might otherwise develop. A nice smile is priceless; it can enhance physical appearance, and it can also boost self confidence as it brings the face into better proportion.
