Lip Closure

My grandson’s top teeth stick out so much ahead of his lower teeth that he can’t close his lips over his teeth. Should I be worried about this condition?

Numerous studies have shown that the more the top teeth stick out over the lowers, the more likely it is that an accident involving the face will result in teeth being involved, and one or more teeth will be fractured. Also alarming is the fact that the farther the upper teeth protrude (stick out) beyond the lowers, the more severe the damage may be. This condition is often caused by finger or thumb habits, unfavorable growth patterns, or even an impaired ability to breathe through the nose. We recommend that you confer with your family dentist. While orthodontic treatment is definitely indicated, a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist or allergist might also be necessary.

Buck Teeth

My child is being teased because he has “buck teeth”. Should I wait until all of his permanent teeth are in the mouth before we see an orthodontist?

If the upper teeth are so far ahead of the lower teeth that the lower lip is habitually trapped under the upper incisors, several negative side effects may develop. Because the lower lip is constantly trapped between the upper and lower teeth, the “buck teeth” never have the ability to attain a normal position. Failing to address this will lead to a problem that will require expensive, comprehensive orthodontics. Generally speaking, the earlier treatment is started the better. In the meantime, the teasing that you mention cannot be a good thing. We recommend that he receive an orthodontic evaluation as soon as possible. There are many simple treatment options that will improve the condition and, in some cases, provide a complete correction.
